A Boy and His Castle

My son rarely asks to have his picture taken, so when he called down the stairs, “Mommy, come see what I made and bring your camera!”, I was stunned.  With camera in hand I headed up to his room where he very proudly showed me the castle he had just finished and then he asked me to take his picture with it.

Have you noticed that when kids are playing with toys they usually get down really close to them?  In their heads, whatever they are playing with is lifesize and they are right there in the middle of it all.  With that in mind, I wanted to really accent the castle by creating the optical illusion that it was larger than it really was.

My Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens was just what I needed.  I put the castle in the foreground, as close as possible to my camera, and I postitioned my son in the background.  Voila!  Now the castle looks at least twice as large as it really is in comparison to my son.

A short time later this castle was destroyed by orcs and a tyrannosaurus rex.  Don’t you just love the imagination of children?
